SingPlay Mobile App
Introduction
SingPlay is a karaoke app that collects songs from people’s iphones or other devices and converts them to karaoke tracks. People can then record themselves singing along to these karaoke tracks and share their recordings with their family, friends, and to the public via social media. The goal was to redesign the app.
While the general idea of the app is interesting, it needed improvements in the user experience and visual design. Before starting to redesign the app, an analysis of the app was done by listing its pros and cons along with a comparison between other karaoke apps. For further research, interviews/surveys were conducted which involved asking people general questions about karaoke and their feelings towards certain situations relating to using SingPlay.

Pros & Cons
These screenshots of the original version of the app are used to show features that work well for the app (blue boxes) and also areas where the app needs improvement (red boxes).
Competitive Analysis
Research
The diagram below shows the results from a survey asking people general questions about their experience with karaoke and karaoke apps. Note these results are based on responses from 20 people.
Concept Validations
Based on the benchmarking analysis and research, around 10-15 small concepts/questions were developed and shown to various people to get their inputs on how they feel about each concept. This helped get an idea of what people are looking for in karaoke apps. From there, concepts and feedback that were similar to each other were combined to create these three larger concepts.
Brand for the New Version
To help improve the user experience of the app, it was rebranded completely. As mentioned in the pros and cons, small fonts and icons were one of the main issues. This new brand is supposed to give a friendly, fun and bold look.
Colors and Typography
The use of more colors represents the idea of fun parties and events where people typically do karaoke. They are meant to be saturated, and have a balance between bright and soft.
The font family "Outfit" was selected because of its round and smooth features and its bold version suits well for this type of brand.
Icons
Sourced from Iconfinder, the icons were selected so that users understood their functions more easily than they did in the original version. In addition, they are more minimalistic with round shapes and thick strokes, which help align with the brand.
Wireframes
These are rough wireframes for some of the main screens to help generate ideas on what content belongs to each screen and the layout/organization. While the main content and user flow stayed the same, changes to the layout were made between the wireframing stage and high-fidelity designing stage.
